A brief story of my day.
Went to a garden center today with Dad.
Got lost.
Couldn't find a lot of seeds.
Inquired to know why one brand of seeds cost more than another. Woman helping me said she used the expensive brand. I got that one. It had prettier packaging anyway, so HA.
I decided on lettuce basil, lemon basil and plain old oregano. I wanted to get specific types of oregano, but nooo. Apparently the girl with Google is more knowledgeable about types of herbs than the huge-ass garden center that sells seeds.
They also didn't have a specific type of rosemary. I wanted to try to find either Arp or Madalene Hill, because I read that both stand up to winters well. Decided to look for more specific types of rosemary in the seedlings section.
Got organic perlite, potting soil and fertilizer.
Couldn't find pot saucers...?!
Went to look at the seedlings.
Got lost.
Found seedlings.
Picked up chocolate mint and peppermint.
Went to put seedlings in our wagon.
Could not find wagon.
Got lost.
Found wagon!
Tried to maneuver wagon around a cart.
Stressed out about not being able to.
"How am I supposed to drive a friggin' car when I can't operate a wagon?"
Oh, yeah, I drove for the first time yesterday. I'm not very good at it.
Kind lady moved cart, and we set out go back to the seedlings.
Got lost.
Found the seedlings section again.
Picked up some fat-spike lavender and garlic chives.
Looked at seedlings for rosemary but they just had ones labeled "Barbecue" and "Upright". Decided I might as well grow them from the seed.
Looked around for lemon balm. This took a while because they didn't label it very well.
Found a plant that looked like lemon balm, and was next to the lemon grass seedlings. Was not sure that this was, in fact, lemon balm, so picked it up and found a dude who was helping out a very Chatty Lady.
Waited several minutes for said Chatty Lady to stop chatting.
Saw Dad getting frustrated, and reminded him that he is very awesome for bringing me here and putting up with people like Chatty Lady.
Overheard helper dude say his name was Danny. Apparently Chatty Lady cannot read because his name was embroidered on his shirt.
Finally, Chatty Lady went away. I asked Danny if it was lemon balm. He said, "Uhh, it smells like it."
He began to say that he could not guarantee that it was definitely lemon balm, whilst Dad found a tiny little sign hidden in a flurry of leaves that let us know that it was lemon balm.
Found our way back to the main store and paid. Remembered that I forgot to get gravel, but we'd already resolved to get a few things at Home Depot at a later date, and plus Dad was getting tired.
Reminded Dad that he is awesome.
Got slightly lost as we tried to find our car, but not too lost.
Loaded everything into trunk. Remembered that I never got the rosemary seeds. Didn't say anything because I knew I'd get a frustrated and tired, "Marielle" from Dad. Instead chose to thank him and remind him that he is awesome.

So basically, I have 2 smaller pots which will house each of the mints, a medium pot which will house the rosemary, and a large pot which will house both the lemon balm and the garlic chives. Then, in the 13-hole strawberry pot which can be seen in the background of the first picture, I'm going to plant 4 holes with lettuce basil, 4 holes with lemon basil, 4 holes with oregano and at the top I'll plant the lavender.
I'm planting them that way based on what I've read about how each one needs to grow (soil moistness, sun, etc...) and obviously the mints shant be touching anything else lest I really want them to overtake all my herbs.
I'm a big n00b when it comes to this stuff, so if you see a problem with how I'm planning to plant these speak now or forever hold your peace and then watch me be sad about it. Of course I'll do more research but yeah.
To get at Home Depot:
Gravel
Rosemary seeds
Water mister
PVC pipe (for the strawberry pot to help with watering)
Saucers
If you have any tips (like what the heck I'm doing with perlite and how to fertilize soil) they would be much appreciated. It appears I have bitten off more than I know how to chew. :)
Hope everyone has had a great weekend!
oh daaaang, busy day! haha, sounds pretty crazy - and awesome!! i would love an herb garden - i love having fresh herbs around but they're so expensive if you want to buy them all at once. i have simply basil and oregano. and chives, and i know they're not an herb but i count them as one for some reason.
ReplyDeletehope everything growwwssss big strong and healthy :)
Hey Mo! Okay...where to start. Hmm, well, the oregano will be extremely hearty and survive cold winters just like rosemary. I saw that you are aware that mint (while being great as a deterrent to some bugs) is invasive and can take over the garden. Oh, and remember basil is a mint and will do the same thing if not controlled.
ReplyDeleteA great way to fertilize is to create a compost pile with your vegetables, fruits, and grains. Coffee is also an excellent fertilizer-just scatter one or two day's worth of brewed coffee grounds directly into the soil once a week. Also planting radishes will add nitrogen to the soil while providing radishes and radish greens (if you please)...
Ooh, and I'm interested in your garlic chives. I bet they'll be delicious while providing protection to other herbs. Have you googled 'companion planting'?
Sorry so long winded-I'm a gardening feign!

Jess - Yeah, I'm not very experienced with a lot of herbs because it always seems like such a shame to pay so much for so little. I wanted to just grow basil but I decided to expand. ;) And chives are an herb, so you've got a good 3. :P
ReplyDeleteStella - Thank you so much! I'm going to head on over to your page 'cause I have a few questions. :)
I don't know a thing about growing anything. Hope it works out for you! Give dad an extra hug!
ReplyDeleteDebbi - Thanks, and I just did. ;)
ReplyDeleteHey Mo, the thing to keep in mind is to strategically place your mints. If you are busy, you may want to grow them in planters separately. Where as if you think that you will be able to weed daily & pull mint sprigs out from places you don't want them, then place them in the garden as you please.
ReplyDeleteIn reference to composting, it's as simple as picking a spot to dump your banana peels, carrot peel, zucchini ends, onion husks, and any other plant matter you would normally throw in the garbage (don't ever put citrus in there though). Your pile will rot and have flies, so pick a far corner of the yard. It's usually ready within a year. Then you take from the bottom & mix it into your soil making it super dense in vitamins and minerals-this causes anything that grows there to be super intense in flavor as well as nutrient dense.
The funny thing about composting is sometimes you'll have something odd happen like a tomato plant sprout up on it's own from you dumping, which is great! You can transplant it. You may want to google this too in order to see if it is right for you. I love it, as I'm not throwing vitamins and minerals into the garbage only to be dumped into some toxic trash dump with all the city's waste- instead they're redeposited into the earth (smile)! Yes!
I hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask if you think of anything else. If I know, I'll tell you, Dearie!

Have fun! Herbs are easy...they kind of take care of themselves!
ReplyDeleteStella - Thanks!
ReplyDeleteKelly - I hope so. That's why I chose them. ;)
I need to start my own herb garden...but I always manage to kill every plant that I buy! Everyone has been giving such good advice that I may just have to give it another shot. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteMonet - Same! I have such a black thumb, so I'm nervous that I'm wasting money on a bunch of dead plants... But I've been getting fantastic advice, especially from Stella, so hopefully it'll go well. :)
ReplyDeleteI grow a few herbs and vegetables - but that doesn't mean I know what I'm doing! I pretty much wing it. You're way ahead of me this year because I haven't planted anything yet. Chocolate mint? Sounds delish. Good luck and keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteReeni - Wow, you must have green thumb if you don't know what you're doing. XD
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, the chocolate mint smells like peppermint patties... Mmmmm.
Thanks, and I will!
