Pay attention!
Step one:
Get a tomato. Don't skimp, here. Get a good one.
Step two:
Refrigerate the tomato for about an hour.
This is optional, but I feel it benefits from a little cooling down.
Step three:
Core and slice the tomato thickly.
Step two:
Lightly sprinkle salt on the tomato. You may use whatever kind you think would work nicely. Sometimes I use kosher, here I used sea salt.
Step three:
Sprinkle heavily with ground cumin, preferably toasted.
Step four:
Eat with a fork.
You may add black pepper if you want, but in my personal opinion that is for the offspring of female hamsters and men who smell badly of elderberries.
I am a tomato fiend, but I've never tried just sprinkling them with salt and cumin and digging in. I'll be trying it out this week for sure. :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband eats them with salt, the daughter too. I prefer mine on a BLT. :)
ReplyDeleteKatie - My favorite part about summer is the tomatoes. :) I thought I was a genius for thinking up cumin and salt on tomatoes, but then I suggested it to my best friend who lives in Egypt and she was like, "Oh, yeah, we do that all the time here." XD
ReplyDeleteDebbi - A BLT sprinkled with salt and cumin...? :D Just kidding. ;)
Hey Mo, this sounds great, and, yes, very North African. Part of my family is Algerian, so this is familiar to me. But I never do it, so I will next time I find a good tomato (which is a feat in and of itself-I need to grow some)...
ReplyDeleteBTW, your'e still a genius to think of it even if your'e not the first! It's actually really hard to come up with something new, since people have been on the planet for so long now (smile)!
Thanks, Stella! Sorry it's hard to find a good tomato. I went to the farmer's market this morning so I'm relishing in my tomato glory for now. :P
ReplyDeleteAnd that's a good point. *hair flip* Hahaha thank you. :)
lol where did you get that about black pepper!? Never pu cumin on fresh tomatoes before. Will try your easy-to-follow-4-step of yours minus black pepper :)
ReplyDeleteTanantha - Monty Python. :P And I hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! My neighbor is growing a huge patch of tomatoes, and I can't wait until they are ripe enough for my first juicy bite. I am enjoying your blog, and as a fellow "Mo" I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteMonet
Monet - Lucky! I'd love to grow my own or at least be able to get them from a friend, but alas, the farmer's market is the next best thing. Hopefully they'll ripen soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't even realize you were a Mo, even though it's kind of obvious. :P Thank you, and you too!
hey Mo
ReplyDeleteyou need some good jersey tomatoes to try this with.....nothing can compare! Thanks for sharing your secret tomato seasoning!
Dennis
Are my Virginian tomatoes inferior, Dennis? :P I just googled those because I wasn't sure if it was a breed of tomato or just tomatoes from the state, but they seem lovely nevertheless. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you're mighty welcome, sir!
Put the tomato under the broiler for a few minutes, it totally ramps up the tomato flavor.
ReplyDeleteAre you really 16? If that's the case, then my congrats, because you are light years ahead of where I was at 16.
Thank you for reading my post. No, really reading it. I put that in there on purpose. Creme cheese is what I call a 50/50 mixture of creme fraiche and mascarpone cheese. Glad you spotted that.
Cheers!
hmmm.. I'm obsessed with tomatoes and just when I though I have had them every different kind of way, I come across your blog. Gonna try this ASAP. Thanks! :o)
ReplyDeleteLazaro - But that makes refrigerating it pointless. :P I'm not much of a fan of warm tomatoes, though, so it may just be me. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I am, and thank you. :)
My pleasure! Thank you for informing me; that sounds much better than cream cheese. ;)
Vanessa - Great, I hope you enjoy them this way!
Yummers! I love cold tomatoes, too!
ReplyDeleteTasha - Aren't they the best?! I know it's not the best to KEEP them in the fridge but when they're kept in there just long enough to get cold, they're amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteI love tomatoes and my husband hates them...but that just means more for me! bahaha! :) Happy Sunday Mo!! xoxo!
ReplyDeleteHahaha that's the same with my family and a lot of stuff. Like brussels sprouts. ;) You too, Kelly! :)
ReplyDeleteooooh interestting! i alwyas do coarse sea salt. but i would so try this! yum
ReplyDeleteMo - I've never used coarse sea salt, 'cause kosher is good enough for me, but I bet it'd be fantastic here. :P
ReplyDeleteI can eat a good tomato like an apple, so I can relate to the minimalism.I haven't had a good tomato since I moved to Seattle 10 years ago. I miss summer tomato sandwiches: tomato, toast, mayo, salt and pepper. The best.
ReplyDeleteSara - That sucks! You should take a vacation to somewhere with really good tomatoes. :P
ReplyDeleteNever tried them with cumin! My favorite way is on toast with mayo and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
ReplyDeleteReeni - I've never had tomato on toast. I'm not a big mayo fan but the toast part sounds awesome. :)
